Soil Vapour Extraction, Soil Vapour Mitigation, Rapid Response
Core Environmental Projects (Core-EP) were engaged to mitigate unacceptable concentrations of Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and Trichloroethylene (TCE) vapour from entering an occupied residential home, located adjacent to an operating dry cleaners.
The solution involved designing and installing a dual-purpose Soil Vapour Extraction (SVE) and Sub-Slab Depressurisation (SSD) system to address the vapour source of contamination at the operating dry cleaners and prevent further migration of PCE and TCE vapours towards the residential home. The SVE system consisted of vertical extraction wells, connected to a blower and an activated carbon filter unit.
The installation of the system was completed within a week, with minimal disruption to the occupants and the operating dry cleaners. The system operated continuously and was remotely monitored by Core-EP to ensure optimal performance and compliance with regulatory requirements.
The installation of the SVE system significantly improved the indoor air quality in the residential home, reducing the PCE and TCE concentrations below the health-based screening levels, and avoiding evacuation of the building. Core-EP also conducted periodic indoor air sampling and analysis to verify the effectiveness of the system and provide reassurance to the occupants of the home, EPA Auditor and the regulator.
