Project Solution

Core Environmental Projects (Core-EP) were engaged to mitigate unacceptable concentrations of Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and Trichloroethylene (TCE) vapour from entering a newly built commercial development, located directly above a chlorinated hydrocarbon impacted groundwater plume.

The solution involved designing and installing a dual-purpose Soil Vapour Extraction (SVE) and Sub-Slab Depressurisation (SSD) system to address the vapour source, along with the application of a retrofit vapour membrane which was compatible with the built structure. The extraction system consisted of both trenched and horizontally bored extraction lines, connected to a blower and an activated carbon filter unit.

The installation of the system was completed amongst an active construction site, with minimal disruption to construction. The system operated continuously and was remotely monitored by Core-EP to ensure optimal performance and compliance with regulatory requirements. Following the construction of the soil vapour mitigation system, Core-EP also prepared a monitoring and management plan to ensure the system's ongoing performance and compliance with regulatory standards. The monitoring and management plan was designed to provide a high level of assurance that the mitigation system would continue to protect the health and safety of the building occupants and the environment from the potential impacts of the chlorinated soil vapours. Core-EP also provided training and guidance to the building staff and contractors on how to operate and maintain the system.
