Project Solution

Core Environmental Projects (Core-EP) were engaged to design and install an alternative landfill gas interception system at the boundary of a former quarry, now closed landfill, where previous designs (by others), while technically feasible, had not considered constructability and the significant costs implications.

The purpose of the system was to intercept the lateral migration of landfill gas towards neighbouring residential development. Several design options were considered during the conceptual design, including gas biofiltration systems, large bored-pier systems and cement-bentonite walls.

The system needed to be low maintenance, integrate with the final built form including public space and aesthetically pleasing. Once the conceptual design was agreed on with relevant stakeholders, including the council and EPA Auditor, Core-EP prepared a detailed design with supporting lateral gas migration calculations, a roadmap with clear performance objectives as well as post-construction monitoring and management requirements.

Overall, the design and construction services resulted in cost-savings for the client in the order of $800,000, while addressing concerns of the local council and regulator.
