Landfill Gas Interception Design, Landfill Gas Pilot Trial, Project Management, Construction Quality Assurance

The Project

Core Environmental Projects prepared a landfill gas interception design for the boundary of a former basalt quarry, now closed landfill.

The purpose of the system was to intercept the lateral migration of landfill gas towards neighbouring properties both in the long-term and short-term during redevelopment of the site, which included additional capping and surcharge. Several design options were considered during the conceptual design, including gas biofiltration systems, large bored-pier systems and cement-bentonite walls.

The system needed to be low maintenance, cost-effective and integrate with the final built form. Early in the construction piece Core undertook a landfill gas collection Pilot Trial and utilised our in-house Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling capabilities to optimise the design parameters such as the gas collector bore diameters, spacings and depth while demonstrating acceptable gas capture efficiencies.

During construction Core provided third-party Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) to certify that all relevant construction elements were installed in accordance with the construction plans, product specifications and manufacturer’s warranty.

Post construction monitoring todate has shown a 10 fold reduction in landfill gas concentrations.
